Is Your Young Reader Progressing?

As your child moves from the “Emergent or Beginning Reader”, it is important to recognize their developmental progression. Indicators of progress may be realized by the following behaviors:

Automatic Recognition of high frequency words, (the, is, in, of, you, that, was, we you, etc.)

Your reader will begin to self-monitor and self-correct as well as pay attention to punctuation cues that tell them to slow down (,) stop (.) or show expression (!)

Progressing readers will engage in discussions about what they have read.

If your new reader demonstrates these characteristics, you should realize your beginning reader is on his/her way to becoming a more proficient reader.
